| Honda Race Teams Launched At Albert Park |
Motorcycle racing journalists and representatives attended a major industry event today at Albert Park, VIC where Commonwealth Games athletics star Tamsyn Lewis joined the festivities to show her support of the official launch of Honda Australia’s 2006 race teams.
Lewis noted the importance of fostering sport within Australia, and in particular providing opportunities for young as well as established athletes. She also commented on the unique opportunity that national motorcycle racing provides for spectators.
“The riders in this country are just as exciting to watch as the guys who race at world level. Australians are really lucky that they can easily go to an event in their home town and see such a fantastic sporting event.”
Honda’s teams for the new season include Joe Rocket Honda and Jardine Honda who will contest the Australian Superbike and Supersport championships, as well as No Fear Honda who will be present at all national off road competitions.
The Joe Rocket Honda team are gearing up for another highly successful season after securing dual titles in 2004 and 2005, a unique sporting accomplishment in the high powered realm of Australian motorsport.
Adam ‘Krusty’ Fergusson, the 31 year old local man who won both crowns in 2004 will head up the multi-titled team and will be joined this year by up and comer Glenn Allerton from Camden, NSW.
“This year we will focus on retaining our titles,” Fergusson said. “That means coming out strong because its much more difficult to make up points later on when there are only seven rounds in the Championship.”
Under Honda’s mentoring scheme, young West Australian Bryan Staring will fly the flag for the company’s junior development team (Jardine Honda) after having made a big impression in 2005.
No Fear Honda’s lead rider and multiple Australian Champion Craig Anderson, will also be looking to make up on his injury hampered ’05 season where he finished runner up in the Supercross Pro Open title and fourth in the national motocross championships.
Craig will be joined by young New Zealander, Cody Cooper, Pro Lite Motocross champion in 2004 as well as the popular 33 year old Troy Dorron who has been racing in Australia for well over 20 years.
Rebecca Lipsett will also rejoin the Team as the country’s only factory-backed female rider, and will compete in the Women’s Cup.
The Japanese company’s Australian operations are based in Melbourne, the home of Australian motorsport and motor manufacturing.
