Mar 7, 2006, 09:49

Jeff Crow
The countdown has commenced to the start of the inaugural Audi Sydney Harbour Regatta with just 5 days to go and over 230 yachts entered.

On 4th and 5th March 2006, over 230 yachts will take their starting positions for the race to the finish line and the major prize – an Audi A4 Avant. Expected to become an internationally-recognised sailing event, the annual Audi Sydney Harbour Regatta was conceived by Middle Harbour Yacht Club, The Spit, Mosman with principal partner, German luxury carmaker, Audi.

The two day sailing championship includes all principal yacht classes such as IRC Maxi, IRC, Sports 30, PHS Yachts, JOG, Etchells, Yngling, Dragon, J24, Sydney 38 One Design, Cav 28 Yachts & Sydney 32 One Design.

Yachts will race in 10 classes on six courses and there will be three races each day. A highly-competitive competition, the Regatta also features on the lead weekend of Sydney Harbour Week, a week-long aquatic celebration of Sydney’s famous harbour.

For the first time ever, the eight major participating clubs in Sydney including SASC, CYCA, RPAYC, RPEYC, RANSA, RSYS, MYC and MHYC will all together to present the prestigious Audi Sydney Harbour Regatta.

Principal Partner, Audi, will award a spectacular major prize for the event’s overall winner. An Audi A4 Avant will be offered as the ultimate prize for the Regatta, along with Perpetual Trophies for Class Winners individually designed and handcrafted by award-winning artist John Woulfe, all of which will be presented at the Official Prize Presentation at Middle Harbour Yacht Club on 7th March 2006.

Audi Australia’s Managing Director, Joerg Hofmann, acknowledged the brand’s passion for competitive sailing around the world.

“Audi is no stranger to high profile regattas around the world, and here in Australia we also want to become a major supporter of Australian sailing,” Mr Hofmann said.

“We are absolutely committed to the Sport of Sailing and the major event prize, the Audi A4 Avant, clearly demonstrates our passion for this highly competitive sport. I think it is the biggest prize for sailing in Australia!

The Audi Sydney Harbour Regatta looks to become a key event in the national sailing calendar and we look forward to a long-term partnership, and continued support of this high-profile competition,” Mr Hofmann added.
