Historic Honda F1 Car Set to Turn Heads
Oct 9, 2007, 10:20

The history of Honda’s famous Red H badge, including a Type R timeline, will be on show at this year’s Australian International Motorshow, with a special display featuring a replica of the second ever Honda F1 car built, the Honda RA272.

The 1.5 litre, 170 kilowatt, V12 powered RA272 debuted in 1965, a year after Honda entered Formula One and was the first Honda to taste Grand Prix victory. Driven by Richie Ginther at the 1965 Mexican Grand Prix, the RA272 marks an important milestone in Honda’s rich and successful motorsport history

Since then Honda has gone on to win 72 Grands Prix, including 5 consecutive Drivers’ championships from 1987-1991 and 6 consecutive constructor’s crowns 1986–1991 partnering both Williams and McLaren.

Alongside the RA272 is the latest Honda to wear the legendary Red H badge, the Civic Type R hot hatch, which has taken Australia by storm since its launch in July 2007 and enthralled customers and the motoring media alike. The Red H badge is a badge of honour that signifies its performance models. The Red H badge is reserved for Honda’s Type R models, and Formula One cars, with ‘R’ meaning Racing.

The first Honda road car to wear the Red H was the NSX-R Supercar, developed in the early 1992 by Honda in conjunction with triple Formula One World Champion Ayrton Senna.

Since then, the Red H badge has graced the DC2 Integra Type R launched in 1995 followed by the first Civic Type R, the EK9 which was launched in Japan in August 1997. 1998 saw the introduction of the Accord Type R in the UK and then in 2001 the second-generation Integra Type R made its debut. With the introduction of the seventh-generation Civic in October 2001 came the first Civic Type R to be built at Honda’s Swindon UK plant.

In September 2006 the production version of the latest Civic Type R was unveiled at the Paris Motorshow, followed by launches in the UK and then Australia in July 2007.

Powered by a high-revving, naturally aspirated, 2.0-litre four-cylinder i-VTEC engine, pumping out 148kW and 193Nm – the Civic Type R sprints to 100km/h in just 6.6 seconds. A close-ratio six-speed manual gearbox combined with sports tuned MacPherson-strut front suspension and torsion beam rear suspension prove that the Honda hatch has been designed with spirited driving as the key motivation.

A dual-zone futuristic dash, red and black sports interior and body-hugging Alcantara racing-style bucket seats complete the sporty theme.

The Civic Type R rides on 18-inch alloy wheels shod with 225 / 40 R18 tyres, and stops with 300mm ventilated front and 260mm solid rear brake discs.

Safety is also a high priority for Honda, the Civic Type R has front, side and curtain airbags, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), ABS brakes with Electronic Brake force Distribution and safety enhancing Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure introduced in the 2006 Legend, and featured in the current Civic sedan and CR-V models.

The Civic Type R is available in three colours – Milano Red, Alabaster Silver and Nighthawk Black, each sharing the same black and red interior. Price is $39,990.

Honda CR-V

Another highlight of the Honda stand is the highly-acclaimed third-generation Honda CR-V, Australia’s most popular compact SUV in March, July and August 2007 which is also making its Australian International Motorshow debut.
